I’m pretty new to yoga and I keep hearing instructors end class with “namaste” (sometimes everyone repeats it, sometimes not). I’ve seen different explanations online: some say it means “the light in me honors the light in you,” others say it’s just a greeting, and a few people say it’s kind of cultural appropriation if used casually.
I don’t want to be disrespectful, but I also don’t want to overthink it every time the teacher says it. Why do yoga instructors say namaste? Is it something I’m expected to say back? And is it actually part of yoga tradition or more of a modern studio habit?
