What yoga poses help with period cramps?

Mister.Yoga — Menstrual comfort & gentle yoga

Giada

Hi everyone 💜 I’m on day 1–2 of my period and the cramps get pretty annoying (lower belly + lower back). I don’t want an intense workout, just something calming that might help me feel less tight and less “compressed.” I’m a beginner and sometimes I’m not sure if I’m doing poses correctly.

What yoga poses help with period cramps? Any gentle sequence ideas, breathing tips, or things to avoid when cramps are bad? (Also: if a pose makes the cramps sharper, I stop right away—just looking for safe comfort.)

Anaya

For cramps, think of apana vayu (downward moving energy) being supported, not forced. Gentle grounding helps the pelvis soften. Try Balasana (Child’s Pose) with knees wide and slow belly breathing, then Supta Baddha Konasana (reclined butterfly) with props under the knees. Add a soft twist like Jathara Parivartanasana (supine windshield-wipers) very small range.

Breathe longer on the exhale—like 4 in, 6 out—to calm the nervous system and ease energy stagnation around the lower chakras. If you feel dizziness, sharp pain, or heavy bleeding changes, rest and consider checking with a professional. The practice should feel like kindness.

Ok bestie, cramps days = cozy yoga only 💅✨ My go-tos:

- Child’s Pose (knees wide, pillow under belly)

- Cat/Cow suuuper slow

- Supine twist (knees side to side)

- Legs up the wall (5–10 min)

- Happy baby (only if it feels GOOD)

Breath: inhale through nose, exhale like you’re melting into the mat. If anything feels stabby = skip. Also warm socks + heating pad is basically part of the sequence lol 🧦🫶

Rina

Keep it simple. No forcing.

1) Supta Baddha Konasana. Support knees. Neutral spine.

2) Apanasana (knees to chest). Do not compress hard. Exhale, draw in. Inhale, soften.

3) Marjaryasana–Bitilasana (Cat–Cow). Move with breath only.

4) Jathara Parivartanasana (supine twist). Shoulders stay down. Small range.

Avoid strong backbends, aggressive core work, and long breath retentions. Pain is a stop signal.

Oh sweetheart, day 1 cramps can feel so heavy 😭💗 Yin is perfect here: long, supported, and no strain.

I love:

- Supported Child’s Pose (bolster/pillow under chest) 3–5 min 😌

- Reclined butterfly with cushions under knees 5 min 🦋

- Legs up the wall 5–10 min (hands on belly, breathe) 🌙

- A very gentle supine twist 2–3 min each side

Put one hand on your lower belly and whisper “soften” on the exhale. And if anything feels wrong or your pain is severe, please get it checked with a professional 🙏💞

Real yoga isn’t posing for Instagram with a “period flow” reel and perfect lighting 🙃🔥

If you have cramps, do the boring stuff that actually helps: lie down, breathe, gentle twists, child’s pose, maybe legs-up-the-wall. Not a headstand because some influencer said it “balances hormones” 🤡

And yeah—if your cramps are brutal or getting worse month to month, talk to a doc. Yoga isn’t a magical uterus reset button.

Pina

Following bc SAME 😭💜 I just started and I’m confused: when people say “breathe into your belly,” do you like… push your belly out? Mine feels tight and I get embarrassed in class 😅

Also do you need a thick mat for knees-to-chest / child’s pose? My knees hurt on my cheap mat 🙈

Cramps are multifactorial, but from a physiology angle you’re mainly trying to downshift the nervous system and reduce perceived pain. Parasympathetic wins.

Protocol I’d test: 8–12 min of nasal breathing with longer exhales (or 4-7-8 if it doesn’t make you lightheaded), then gentle hip openers on the floor (reclined butterfly, supported child’s pose) + supine twists. Track HRV/sleep the night before—my worst “cramp days” correlate with poor sleep and stress.

Avoid heat + dehydration combos if you’re prone to dizziness. And if pain is intense/unusual, get checked.

period cramps = the body saying “pls be soft” 🥺💗✨ i do a lil moon-flow (even if it’s not full moon lol)

poses: baby pose (child’s), sleepy butterfly, lil side-to-side knees, legs on the wall 🌙

and i put rose quartz near my belly + breathe like i’m sending pink glitter to my womb 😂🔮 manifesting gentle vibes only!!! if it’s super painful tho pls get help, you deserve care 💕

SandroHot

I’m a hot yoga addict but on heavy cramp days I do NOT force heat. If you’re cramping, intense 40°C classes can feel like a boss fight.

If you still want movement: warm room (not sauna), slow cat-cow, child’s pose, supine twist, and savasana with a towel under knees. If sweating makes you feel worse, bail early. Hydrate, electrolytes, and listen to your body.

BeaM

Gentle is the right intention, Giada 🤍 (Also adding for anyone reading who might be pregnant: cramps/pelvic pain can mean different things—please check in with your provider.)

For period cramps, I typically suggest:

- Supported Child’s Pose (or wide-knee version) with a pillow

- Cat/Cow with slow breath

- Side-lying rest pose (pillow between knees) 😌

- Legs up the wall if it feels good (come out slowly)

Avoid anything that creates pressure or strain in the abdomen. If pain is severe, sudden, or different than your usual, seek medical advice 🙏

Cramps can be physical, sure, but a lot of people don’t talk about the frequency side of it. The pelvis stores emotional static, and modern life is basically a constant low-grade signal attack.

Do gentle forward folds and long exhales to “drop” the energy back to earth. If you can, turn off Wi‑Fi for an hour, dim the lights, and breathe with a low hum (vibration matters). Ancient practices knew what they were doing—before everything got commercial.

When pain rises,

make space.

Child’s pose.

Long exhale.

Rest.

As a former “just smash the workout” person… cramps humbled me 😅🧘‍♀️ For me the best relief is mobility + chill:

- Cat/cow 1–2 min

- Knees-to-chest (gentle) 1 min

- Supine twist 1 min each side

- Legs up the wall 5 min

It hits low back + hips without loading anything. If it makes pain sharper, stop. Also, don’t underestimate walking + breathing—low intensity is still a win 💪✨

Cramps days are when I go full “soft girl recovery” 🕯️🤍 I set up a cozy corner with a bolster (or a firm pillow), blanket, and an eye mask.

Supported reclined butterfly + legs-up-the-wall are my staples. Also, a grippy mat helps you relax because you’re not subtly tensing to avoid slipping (I switched to a thicker premium mat and my knees thanked me). And yes: warm layers + cute socks are part of the ritual 🧦✨

For menstrual discomfort, keep the practice gentle and inward. Think: soothe the prana, support apana.

You may try a simple mantra with breath: silently “Sat” on the inhale, “Nam” on the exhale, lengthening the exhale to calm the mind. Postures: Supta Baddha Konasana supported, Balasana, and a soft supine twist.

Avoid intense kriyas, strong breath of fire, and deep locks (bandhas) when you feel tender. If pain is intense or unusual, seek proper care.

Pippo

My favorite period pose is “corpse pose but with snacks nearby” 😂🍫

But seriously: child’s pose + gentle twists are like the only times my body is like “ok fine.” Anything that feels like a sit-up can go straight to jail 😭🧘

NadiaS

If you want something very accessible (even from bed or a chair), try this gentle routine:

- Seated belly breathing: one hand on belly, one on chest. Slow exhale 5–8 rounds.

- Seated cat-cow: hands on knees, round and widen the back on exhale, lift chest on inhale.

- Seated side bend: one arm up, lean softly, keep hips grounded.

- Seated twist: turn gently, no pulling on the knees.

Then lie down with a pillow under the knees. Comfort is the goal. If pain is severe or new, please consult a healthcare professional.

In Ayurveda, cramps often reflect vata aggravation (dry, cold, moving) in the pelvic area—so warmth, grounding, and gentle movement can help.

Yoga-wise: supported child’s pose, reclined butterfly, and slow supine twists. Food/drink: warm ginger or fennel tea, a little cinnamon in warm water, and easy-to-digest meals. Avoid lots of cold/raw foods if you notice they worsen cramps.

Not medical advice of course—if your cramps are intense or changing, it’s worth speaking with a professional.

DadoFlex

Ok but real talk: if I do these “gentle” poses on period days am I losing flexibility gains?? 😭🔥 I’m trying to get splits ASAP.

Also which pose is the FASTEST for releasing hips when you’re cramping? I don’t wanna waste time 😅

Sere

I used to panic when cramps hit because it felt like my body was “out of control.” Yoga helped me treat it like a moment to slow down 🥺🌿

Child’s pose with a pillow + counting longer exhales is my safe place. Sometimes I just do 5 minutes and it already lowers my stress, which weirdly makes the cramps feel less loud. If you’re having super intense pain though, please don’t push through alone—getting support is valid 💜

PaoloK

From a yogic lens, the question is not only “what yoga poses help with period cramps,” but also how we relate to discomfort. The Yoga Sutras speak of abhyasa (steady practice) and vairagya (non-grasping). On painful days, the practice can be restraint rather than intensity.

Choose postures that cultivate sukha (ease): supported child’s pose, gentle supine twists, and quiet breath. Let the aim be compassion, not achievement. And remember—ahimsa first, including toward your own body.

RickyBali

When I’m on my period I do my super soft morning routine like I learned in Bali 🧘‍♀️🌺: ginger tea, no phone for 1 hour, and a gentle flow.

Child pose, reclined butterfly, legs up the wall… then 10 min meditation. Honestly it help so much, you just need be consistent. If it’s really painful maybe talk with a doctor okk.

Any evidence? Links?

What studies show yoga reduces menstrual pain? Which poses were used? Small trials vs. controls matters. Also: effect size? Duration?

Anecdotes are fine. But I’d like data.

If you ever try aerial (not on a super crampy day), the hammock can be soooo supportive 😍🪽 For cramps I like hammock-supported savasana and a very gentle supported forward fold where the fabric holds your torso.

But keep it mellow—no intense inversions if you feel drained. At home on the mat: legs up the wall is the “aerial vibe” without the setup 😄

Lia

Giada, you’re doing the right thing by listening and stopping when something feels sharp 🥺💜 This community has your back.

A tiny “cramp comfort” combo you can try:

1) Child’s pose with a pillow (1–3 min)

2) Cat/cow (1 min)

3) Knees-to-chest hug (slow breaths)

4) Supine twist (gentle)

5) Legs up the wall (as long as it feels soothing)

And please remember: you don’t have to push through pain to be “good at yoga.” If cramps are severe, new, or scary, you deserve professional support too 🙏💗
