What yoga poses help with headaches?

Mister.Yoga — Headache relief & gentle yoga

Livia

Hi everyone 🤍 I’ve been getting more headaches lately (mostly tension-y, like tight neck/shoulders after laptop days). I’m not looking for a “cure,” just some yoga poses that can help calm things down and maybe prevent them.

I’m a beginner and I notice that when I do random YouTube flows I sometimes feel worse if there’s a lot of forward folds or anything that puts pressure in my head. Are there specific yoga poses that help with headaches, especially the stress/tension type? Also—are there poses I should avoid if I already have a headache? Any breathwork tips are welcome too. If it matters: I sit a lot for work, drink coffee, and my jaw gets tight when I’m stressed.

Ananda

Dear Livia, headaches often arise when prana (life force) gets blocked around the neck, jaw, and the space between the brows (ajna chakra). Rather than “doing more,” invite softness.

Gentle poses: Balasana (Child’s Pose) with the forehead supported on a folded blanket, Supta Baddha Konasana (reclined bound angle) with props, and Viparita Karani (legs up the wall) if it feels comfortable. Add slow neck releases and a supported Savasana.

Breath: try nadi shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) for 3–5 minutes, very gentle, no force. Keep the exhale slightly longer than the inhale.

Avoid strong inversions, intense backbends, or any pose that increases pressure in your head when you already have pain. And if headaches are frequent, severe, or changing, it’s wise to check in with a healthcare professional. May your breath bring you back home.

Miki

Okay bestie, tension headaches are SO often “neck + shoulders + stress” vibes 😭✨ Here are my go-to yoga poses that help with headaches (gentle edition):

- Legs Up The Wall (Viparita Karani) for 5–10 min

- Supported Child’s Pose (forehead on pillow/blanket)

- Cat-Cow SLOW + tiny range

- Thread the Needle (but keep it comfy, no forcing)

- Supine twist (knees side to side)

Also jaw tight? Do “lion’s breath” (stick tongue out, exhale “haaa”) a few rounds 😅 and shoulder rolls.

Big note: if forward folds make you feel worse, skip them when you have a headache. And hydrate + chill the caffeine a bit if you can. If headaches are super frequent or intense, def talk to a pro. Self-care glow up, not suffering 💅

Giorgio

Headache: reduce strain. No force.

1) Tadasana. Align ears over shoulders. Chin slightly tucked.

2) Cat–Cow. Move with breath. Slow.

3) Supported Balasana. Forehead supported. Neck long.

4) Supta Padangusthasana with strap. One leg at a time. Pelvis stable.

5) Savasana. Eyes relaxed.

Breathing: nasal. Smooth. Exhale longer.

Avoid: headstands. Strong inversions. Fast vinyasa. Deep forward folds if pressure increases.

If headaches persist or worsen, seek medical evaluation.

Oh Livia, I feel you sweetheart 💜 headaches and tight shoulders are such a common “modern life” thing 😢✨

In yin style, I’d keep it super gentle and long-held:

- Supported Child’s Pose (pillow under chest) 3–5 min 🥰

- Reclined Butterfly with lots of cushions 4–6 min 🌸

- Legs Up the Wall 5–10 min (add an eye pillow if you have one) 😴

- A simple neck release: lying down, slowly turn head side to side like “no” (tiny movement) 💕

Then a short meditation: breathe into the back of your ribs, and soften your jaw on every exhale. Sometimes I literally whisper “relax” to my forehead 😌

If a pose increases pain, come out right away. And if headaches are frequent, please also check with a doctor just to be safe 🤍🤍🤍

Vale

Real yoga isn’t posing for Instagram with a headache and a ring light 🙃🔥

If your head hurts, maybe don’t do “inversions for content” and then act surprised. The basics actually help: chill, breathe, loosen the neck/upper back, stop forcing folds that make pressure in your skull.

Legs up the wall, supported child’s pose, a super gentle twist. Congrats, it’s not sexy but it works.

And if you’re getting headaches a lot, talk to a professional instead of crowdsourcing medical care from strangers. Yes, even me 😘

Tina

Following because SAME 😭💗 I’m super new and I always wonder like… am I breathing wrong?? When I get a headache, even Down Dog feels like too much pressure in my head.

Is it normal to feel dizzy in forward folds? Also what kind of mat do you use for gentle stuff (mine is slippery lol) 😅

I tried legs up the wall once and it was actually nice, but I felt silly just… lying there 🙈

Neo

For headache-prone desk work, I treat yoga as downregulation + cervical/thoracic mechanics.

Protocol I’ve seen help (n=me + clients):

- 5–10 min parasympathetic: legs-up-wall + nasal breathing (long exhale)

- Thoracic mobility: supported fish on a bolster (or rolled towel) to open chest (reduces neck compensation)

- Gentle neck CARs (controlled articular rotations) + scapular retraction work

Breathwork: don’t go hard. Over-breathing can spike symptoms. Try 4s inhale / 6–8s exhale.

Also: sleep quality + hydration + caffeine timing affect headaches a lot. HRV tends to improve when you add evening yin/restorative sessions.

If headaches are frequent, sudden, or different than usual, get checked. Performance optimization starts with ruling out red flags.

Kiki

Liviaaaa headaches = your vibes are like “too much brain, not enough aura” 😵‍💫💗 (been there)

Soft yoga poses that help with headaches for me:

- legs up the wall (I put rose quartz on my belly lol)

- child’s pose with forehead on a fluffy pillow (third eye cuddles!!) ✨

- reclined twist like a sleepy noodle

And I do a little moon-breath moment: inhale like you’re sipping calm, exhale like you’re releasing static 😮‍💨

If it’s a strong headache tho, pls don’t push through. Sometimes it’s not “energy,” it’s your body asking for help, so doctor if it’s recurring okie 🥺🌙

Dario

Not gonna lie, I live in hot yoga, but if you’re actively headachy, a 40°C room can be a gamble.

When I feel one coming on, I go *cool + gentle*:

- legs up the wall

- supported child’s pose

- supine figure-4 (hips can pull on low back which tugs on neck)

- long savasana

If you do heated classes, hydrate + electrolytes matter. Some “headaches” are just dehydration/heat stress. And if any dizziness/nausea hits, you’re done for the day.

Recurring headaches = check in with a professional. No badge for suffering.

Elena

Hi Livia 🤍 Just chiming in with a gentle note in case you (or anyone reading) is pregnant or might be: headache relief yoga should be extra soft and supported.

Safe, calming options for many people:

- Side-lying rest (Savasana on the left side) with pillow support 😊

- Seated cat-cow on a chair

- Supported child’s pose (knees wide, lots of props) if it feels okay

- Legs up the wall can be okay for some, but in later pregnancy some prefer a side-lying “legs elevated on cushions” version instead.

Breath: simple belly-and-rib breathing, slow exhale 😌

And please: headaches in pregnancy can have many causes, so if they’re persistent, severe, or unusual, it’s important to contact your healthcare provider promptly 💛

Sandro

Headaches are not always “stress.” Sometimes it’s overload from screens, EMF, and the constant frequency soup we live in. The body is sensitive; the third eye area gets hammered.

Yoga poses that help with headaches: anything that grounds and pulls energy down from the head—child’s pose (forehead on earth), legs up the wall, slow spinal waves.

Add: humming breath (bhramari). The vibration resets the system.

But listen: if headaches are new or escalating, don’t just spiritualize it—get checked. You can be awakened AND responsible.

Zenio

When the head is loud,

make the breath quiet.

Lie down.

Exhale longer.

Stop chasing poses.

Marco

Desk + tight traps = hello tension headaches 😅🏋️

What helps me (CrossFit neck gets wrecked sometimes):

- Thread the Needle (gentle)

- Puppy Pose on forearms (but back off if it spikes head pressure)

- Supported fish (opens pecs so shoulders aren’t living in your ears)

- Legs up the wall to downshift

Also: a lot of my “headache days” are actually from jaw clenching + crappy posture. I started doing 2 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing after training and it weirdly helps.

If headaches are frequent, definitely get a pro opinion. But for tension headaches, mobility + calm breathing is a solid combo.

Giada

For headaches I go full “restorative aesthetic” mode 😌💜

Poses: supported child’s pose with a bolster, reclined butterfly with blocks/blankets, and legs up the wall with an eye pillow. The key is SUPPORT so your neck doesn’t work.

Also, tiny tip: a good mat + props matter. A thicker mat and a soft bolster (or even a neatly rolled duvet) makes it feel like a little spa ritual. I light a candle and put my phone away for 10 minutes ✨

If any pose increases pressure, skip it. And recurring headaches deserve a proper medical check-in too.

Priya

Headache can be a sign that energy is concentrated in the upper centers without grounding. We invite apana (downward flow) and soothe ajna.

Gentle practices:

- Viparita Karani (legs up the wall) with long, soft breathing

- Balasana with the forehead supported (calms the mind)

- Bhramari pranayama (humming bee breath) to quiet mental vibration

A simple mantra in the exhale: “Sat Nam.” Keep it subtle.

Please do not force kapalabhati or strong breath of fire during a headache. If symptoms are frequent or intense, consult a healthcare professional alongside your practice.

Luca

The only pose that helps my headaches is “Corpse Pose” because I’m basically dead after work 😂🧘

Jokes aside: legs up the wall + a pillow over the eyes = instant downgrade from “brain on fire” to “kinda human.”

Also if a YouTube flow says “now fold deeper” and your skull says “nope,” believe your skull 😅

Nadia

Hi Livia, you can get a lot of relief without going down to the floor at all.

Try this gentle chair sequence:

1) Sit tall, feet flat. Slow shoulder rolls (5 each way).

2) Chin tucks: glide chin back (not down) 5 times.

3) Ear-to-shoulder stretch, very mild, 2–3 breaths each side.

4) Seated cat-cow: hands on thighs, move with your breath.

5) Rest: hands on belly, slow exhale for 1–2 minutes.

If any movement increases your headache, stop and rest. And if headaches are frequent or severe, please talk with a healthcare professional. Gentle and consistent usually wins.

Asha

From an Ayurveda lens, many headaches are aggravated by excess Vata (stress, dryness, overthinking) or Pitta (heat, intensity). Your desk work + coffee can push both.

Yoga poses that help with headaches (especially tension): supported child’s pose, reclined bound angle, and a short legs-up-wall. Keep the practice cooling and quiet.

Supportive habits (not medical advice, just gentle ideas): warm water sips, reducing late-day coffee, and calming teas like chamomile or tulsi. Some people like ginger, but if you run “hot,” keep it mild.

If headaches are frequent, new, or severe, do get a medical check. Yoga + lifestyle works best when you know what you’re dealing with.

Teo

Ok but like… if tension headaches come from tight neck/shoulders, wouldn’t the fastest fix be to just get super flexible there?? 😤💪😂

What’s the quickest yoga pose progression for neck/upper back mobility? Like daily deep stretches? I’m trying to speedrun this.

(Also yeah I know “don’t force it” but… how much is too much 😅)

Irene

I used to get headaches when my anxiety was high and I was basically holding my breath all day 🥺🌿

The biggest help wasn’t a “hard” pose, it was doing very small, safe things:

- legs up the wall in silence

- supported child’s pose

- a hand on my chest + belly and just noticing the breath

When I feel embarrassed in class, I remind myself nobody is grading me. If a pose makes my head feel worse, I rest and it’s okay 💗

And like others said: if it’s frequent or scary, please get it checked. You deserve peace.

Paolo

In the Yoga Sutras, the practice is ultimately about reducing the fluctuations of the mind (citta vritti nirodhah). For many of us, headaches are a very tangible sign of those fluctuations manifesting in the body—especially through tension and restless attention.

So yes, certain yoga poses can help with headaches, but the “pose” is part of a broader method: steadiness (abhyasa) and non-grasping (vairagya). Practically that means restorative postures, gentler breathing, and not forcing.

Try: supported child’s pose, reclined rest, legs up the wall, plus a simple observation of exhale. If symptoms persist, wise action includes seeking professional medical guidance.

BaliVivo

When I was in Bali on retreat my headaches literally dissapeared, like no joke 🙏✨ I think it was the morning yoga + no phone + coconuts lol.

For poses that help with headaches: legs up the wall, supported childs pose, and a super gentle twist. Also alternate nostril breathing is magic but dont push it.

If you do screen work, try a 10 min digital detox in the afternoon, it helps so much. And if headaches keep coming back, pls see a doctor just to be safe ok 💗

Sara

Any evidence? Which headache type?

Tension-type headaches sometimes correlate with neck/shoulder muscle tension and stress. Gentle stretching + relaxation may help.

I’d look for studies on yoga for tension-type headache and stress reduction. Also track triggers: sleep, caffeine, hydration, screen time.

If headache is severe, sudden, neurologic symptoms, or increasing frequency: medical evaluation.

Fede

Okay hear me out: aerial yoga can be AMAZING for “neck feels compressed” days, BUT only if you keep it gentle 😇🪽

In a hammock you can do a supported forward fold where the fabric holds your torso so you’re not yanking your neck/shoulders. Also a super supported savasana in the hammock is like being rocked to sleep.

That said, if forward folds usually worsen your headache, I wouldn’t experiment on a headache day. Start when you feel okay and with a trained instructor.

For at-home: legs up the wall + supported child’s pose are the safest classics.

Marta

Livia, you’re doing the right thing by asking gently and noticing what makes you feel worse 🤍🫶 You don’t have to “push through” to be a real yogi.

A cozy headache-friendly mini practice:

- 2 minutes seated breathing (slow exhale)

- supported child’s pose (or just hug a pillow) 3–5 minutes

- legs up the wall 5 minutes

- savasana with a folded blanket under knees

And yes, totally valid to avoid anything that adds pressure to your head. If headaches are frequent, changing, or worrying, please get medical support too—you deserve answers and reassurance 💜✨
