Hi everyone, I’m 63 and I’ve been thinking about starting yoga, but I honestly don’t know what it’s like for beginners over 60 in a real class. I’m not super flexible, my balance is so-so, and I get a bit anxious about being the “slow one” in the room.
I’m not looking to do crazy poses—I’d mainly like to move more gently, improve posture, and maybe sleep better. What do beginner classes usually feel like at this age? Is it mostly stretching? Is there a lot of getting up and down from the floor? Do teachers offer modifications without making you feel awkward? Also… do I need special equipment or a certain type of mat?
If you started yoga after 60, I’d love to hear what surprised you (good or bad) and what style or class type felt safest to begin with.
