Hi everyone, I keep seeing the term “trauma informed yoga” and I’m not totally sure what it actually means in practice. I’ve done a few regular yoga classes (mostly vinyasa) and sometimes I get unexpectedly emotional during long holds or when the room is very quiet. Nothing dramatic, just a wave of anxiety or a sudden urge to cry.
I’m not trying to self-diagnose anything, but I do want a safer, more grounded experience. Is trauma informed yoga a specific style (like yin/hatha) or more like a way the teacher structures class? What should I look for in a studio description, and what usually changes compared to a “normal” class (music, hands-on assists, language, etc.)?
If you’ve tried it, I’d love to hear what it felt like and whether it helped you feel more comfortable. Thanks.
