what are the best yoga poses for relaxation?

Mister.Yoga — Relax & Restore

Giada

Hi everyone 🌿 I’m looking for the best yoga poses for relaxation because my nervous system feels “stuck on” lately. I work at a laptop all day, shoulders are always tense, and at night my brain keeps replaying everything 😅

I’m not trying to get a sweaty workout—more like something I can do in the evening to wind down, breathe, and sleep better. I’m a beginner-ish: I know Down Dog, Child’s Pose, and a basic forward fold, but I’m not flexible and I don’t want to strain my neck or low back.

If you have a small routine (like 10–20 minutes) or specific poses that actually calm you, please share. Bonus if you include breathing cues or what to focus on mentally. Thanks 💜

Ravi

For deep relaxation, keep the intention gentle: “I soften, I release.” Begin with 3–5 minutes of slow breathing (inhale 4, exhale 6) to invite the parasympathetic response.

Poses I recommend: Balasana (Child’s Pose) with forehead supported, Supta Baddha Konasana (reclined bound angle) with cushions under knees, and Viparita Karani (legs up the wall). These soothe the energy flow and calm the mind.

Bring awareness to Muladhara and Svadhisthana chakras (root + sacral): feel grounded, safe, and supported. End with a long Savasana, hands on belly, noticing the breath like a quiet river.

Ok bestie, “relax yoga” is SUCH a vibe 🧘‍♀️✨ If you want a quick wind-down, try this 12–15 min flow:

1) Child’s Pose (1–2 min) + slow nose breaths 😌

2) Cat-Cow (1 min) for spine “reset”

3) Thread-the-Needle (1 min each side) for shoulders

4) Seated Forward Fold but BENT knees (1–2 min) = no ego pls 😂

5) Legs Up The Wall (3–5 min) = instant calm

6) Savasana (2–3 min) and just… let yourself be.

Breath tip: longer exhales = nervous system glow up. If anything pinches, back off. Cozy blanket = 10/10 self-care.

Enzo

Relaxation requires correct setup.

Do: Child’s Pose. Forehead supported. Neck neutral.

Do: Supta Baddha Konasana. Pelvis heavy. Ribcage soft.

Do: Viparita Karani. Low back neutral. No pain.

Breathing: inhale through nose. Exhale longer. No forcing.

Avoid deep forward folds if hamstrings pull the lumbar spine. Use bent knees. Use props.

Silvia

Oh honey, you’re not alone 💜☺️ For evening relaxation I love yin-style holds (slow, supported, no pushing) 🌙🕯️

My sweet little routine:

• Reclined Butterfly with pillows (3 min) 🥰

• Supported Child’s Pose (3 min) 🤍

• Legs up the Wall (5 min) 😴✨

• Savasana with one hand on heart (3–5 min) 💗

Try breathing like you’re “sighing” out stress on every exhale. And if your mind races, just come back to the feeling of your body being held by the floor 🤗

“Best yoga poses for relaxation” = the ones you actually DO, not the ones influencers film while pretending they’re calm 🤳😌 Real yoga isn’t posing for Instagram.

Anyway, basics work: Child’s Pose, Legs-up-the-wall, and lying on the floor doing absolutely nothing (aka Savasana). Wild concept: turn off your phone, dim the lights, breathe like a human. 😏🔥

Nina

Following because SAME 😭🧘‍♀️ I started like 2 weeks ago and I get embarrassed in class when I can’t fold forward at all 🙈

Is it ok if my knees are super bent in forward folds? Also in Child’s Pose my hips don’t reach my heels… do I put a pillow under my belly? And for breathing, do you inhale/exhale through nose only? 😅

Also random: does a thicker mat help with relaxing poses? Mine is kinda thin and my knees complain 🥲

Luca

If your goal is relaxation + sleep, pick poses that downshift HRV in a predictable way: longer exhales, supported positions, minimal muscular effort.

My “sleep stack” (10–15 min): 5 min legs-up-the-wall + nasal breathing (exhale longer), then 2–3 min supported supine twist each side, finish with 3–5 min body scan in savasana. Tracks well for me on nocturnal HRV and sleep latency.

Avoid intense stretching right before bed if it ramps you up. And if anxiety is persistent, pairing yoga with CBT tools or a professional can be a big win.

Lilli

Omg yesss relaxation poses are like… *literal aura hugs* 🥺💗✨ I do Legs Up The Wall when the moon is feeling LOUD 🌙 and I put a lil rose quartz on my belly (pls don’t judge hehe)

Try: reclined butterfly + one hand on heart, one on tummy, and imagine pink light vibes flowing in and stress melting outttt 🌸🔮

And Child’s Pose is like returning to your safe cocoon 🫶 Manifest calm, breathe slow, you got thisss!

Dario

Not gonna lie, I’m a hot yoga addict, so my “relaxation” comes AFTER I sweat my soul out 😅 But if you want pure calm, keep it gentle.

Legs up the wall is undefeated. Also a long savasana with a towel/blanket over you hits like a post-sauna reset. If you ever try heated classes, just know they’re not automatically relaxing—sometimes they’re mental endurance first, zen later.

Hi Giada 💜 If anyone reading is pregnant (or if you might be in the future), relaxation yoga can be wonderful, but keep it very gentle and supported 🤰✨

Great calming options: supported side-lying rest (pillow between knees), seated breathing with hands on ribs, and a gentle child’s pose variation with knees wide (only if comfortable). Legs up the wall can feel amazing, but during pregnancy it may not be ideal for everyone—listen to your body and ask your prenatal care provider if unsure.

Slow breathing + soft jaw/shoulders is the key 😌

Omar

Relaxation isn’t just muscles. It’s frequency. When you hold still in Savasana, you’re not “resting,” you’re tuning the nervous system like an antenna.

Viparita Karani and Child’s Pose quiet the noise so the third eye can actually receive. Most people can’t relax because they’re flooded with hidden stimulation (screens, algorithms, constant signal).

Try 7 minutes of silence after your poses. No music. That’s where the real practice begins.

Zenio

One pose.

One breath.

Relaxation arrives

when you stop chasing it.

From a former “just lift heavy” person: the best yoga poses for relaxation are the ones that unload your joints and let the breath slow down 😅🏋️‍♀️➡️🧘

My recovery favorites after training: thread-the-needle (shoulders), reclined twist (T-spine), and legs-up-the-wall (calves + low back feels sooo good). Keep knees bent in folds to protect the back.

If you’re tight like I was, props aren’t cheating, they’re progress 🙌

Chiara

For a relaxing evening vibe, I set up a little “soft ritual” ✨🕯️: clean space, dim lamp, lavender spray, and yes—good props.

Poses: supported child’s pose (bolster/pillows), reclined butterfly with blocks under knees, then legs up the wall. A premium mat with cushion helps a lot for knees/hips (and makes you actually want to practice). Also comfy leggings that don’t dig in = instant relaxation 😌💜

Kiran

For relaxation, approach it as pratyahara—turning the senses inward. Begin with a few rounds of long deep breathing, then rest in Supta Baddha Konasana.

You may add a gentle mantra mentally: “Sat Nam” with the breath (Sat on inhale, Nam on exhale). Keep it soft, not forceful.

If you feel agitation, place one palm on the navel center to stabilize apana vayu (downward grounding energy), then finish in Savasana.

Pippo

Best yoga pose for relaxation: the one where you lie down and pretend you’re “listening to your breath” but you’re actually thinking about pasta 🍝😌

Jokes aside: Legs up the wall is magic. Also child’s pose. And if forward fold feels like your hamstrings are filing a complaint, bend the knees and call it “advanced self-respect” 😂🧘‍♂️

Teresa

If your body is tired from sitting all day, you can relax with chair yoga too—very gentle and accessible.

Try: seated cat-cow (slow), shoulder rolls, a supported seated forward fold with elbows on thighs, and a seated figure-4 stretch only if the knee feels safe. Finish with feet flat, hands on belly, and 10 slow breaths.

Relaxation is not about flexibility. It’s about comfort and steady breathing.

Anita

For the best yoga poses for relaxation, I love pairing a soft evening practice with warm, calming habits 🌿

Poses: supported child’s pose, reclined twist, and legs up the wall—then a quiet savasana. After, sip something warm like chamomile or tulsi tea (if it suits you), and keep dinner light so digestion doesn’t keep the mind busy.

In Ayurveda terms, you’re soothing excess vata (restlessness) with warmth, slowness, and grounding.

Nico

Ok but like… how fast can I get relaxed AND flexible 😂💪✨ If I do forward folds every night will I unlock splits sooner??

I do love legs up the wall because it feels like a cheat code for recovery. But tell me honestly: is 20 min daily enough or do I need like 45 min to see fast results? 😅

Iris

Yoga helped me a lot with anxiety and burnout, especially the really quiet stuff 🌙🫧

When my thoughts loop, I do: child’s pose with a pillow + slow exhales, then legs up the wall in a dark room. I tell myself “nothing to fix right now.” It sounds small but it changes everything.

If your stress feels overwhelming, it’s also totally okay to talk to a therapist/doctor—yoga can be a support, not the only tool 🤍

Tommaso

If we frame “relaxation” through the Yoga Sutras, it’s less about achieving a perfect pose and more about reducing the fluctuations of the mind (citta-vrtti-nirodhah).

Restorative shapes like Savasana or Viparita Karani help because they encourage pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses) and a steadier breath. In the Gita, equanimity is a practice—showing up gently, without grasping for an outcome.

So choose a few simple poses, then practice staying with the breath when the mind wants to run.

Ale

When I was in Bali on a retreat, the best yoga poses for relaxation were super simple but done every morning 🌴✨ I do legs up the wall + reclined twist + savasana, and then no phone for like 30 min (digital detox hits different).

Also journaling after helps, even if you dont know what to write. Breathwork + calm poses = instant reset, its really works for me 😌

Giorgio

Which poses are “best” depends on outcome. Sleep latency. Anxiety scores. Pain.

Evidence is stronger for yoga improving stress and sleep in general than for one specific pose.

That said, low-intensity, longer-hold positions plus slow breathing are plausible mechanisms. Any RCTs comparing restorative sequences vs. standard stretching? Link them if you have them.

Sara

If you ever get the chance: aerial yoga relaxation is unreal 😍🩷 The hammock supports you so you can fully let go.

For calm: hammock “cocoon” (gentle sway), supported reclined butterfly in the fabric, and a floating savasana. It feels like your spine decompresses without effort.

But for at-home, legs up the wall gives a similar “weight off” sensation—just less floaty 😂

Elena

Giada, thank you for sharing this so honestly 🥺💜 You deserve rest, not more pressure.

If you want a super simple 10-minute reset: 2 min child’s pose (with pillows), 3 min thread-the-needle (both sides), 3–4 min legs up the wall, then 1 min of hand-on-heart breathing. That’s enough. Truly.

And if a day is heavy, doing just ONE calming pose still counts. We’re all cheering for you here 🤍🫶✨
