Is yoga good for weight loss?

Mister.Yoga — Weight loss & wellness

Lia

Hi everyone. I’m thinking of starting yoga mainly because I need a reset (stress is high, sleep is messy), but I also want to lose some weight in a realistic way. I’m not expecting “drop 10 kg in a month” or anything, I just want something I can actually stick with.

I walk a bit but I hate the gym, and I’ve noticed when I’m anxious I snack more. A friend told me yoga helped her “lean out,” but online I see mixed opinions: some say yoga burns nothing, others say it changed their body.

So… is yoga good for weight loss? Which styles help the most? And does it work better as a main workout, or only if you combine it with diet/other training? I’m a beginner and I’m not super flexible.

Arjun

Yoga can support weight loss, but often in a quieter way than people expect. When prana (energy) flows well—through breath, steady practice, and a calmer mind—your relationship with food, stress, and sleep begins to shift. That alone can reduce “anxious eating.”

Asana (postures) can build strength and improve metabolism, especially with more dynamic practices, but the deeper gift is regulation of the nervous system. Try simple daily pranayama (gentle breathing, not forceful) and a consistent practice 4–6 days/week. When the mind settles, habits become easier to change. Yoga is not only burning calories; it is aligning the whole system.

Ok yes yoga can help with weight loss BUT the glow up is usually from consistency + stress down + better choices 😌✨ If you’re snacking from anxiety, yoga is actually SO clutch.

If you want more “workout” vibes: vinyasa, power yoga, sculpt-y flows. If you want to stop spiraling and sleep better: slower flows + breathwork + some yin.

I tell beginners: 20–30 min most days > 1 huge class once a week. Mix yoga + walks and you’re golden. And pls don’t stress flexibility, that comes later 💗

Giorgio

Yoga helps if done correctly.

Do not chase sweat.

Learn alignment. Engage bandhas lightly. Breathe through the nose. Long exhale.

For weight loss: regular practice, steady effort. Surya Namaskar. Standing series. Core stability.

Diet matters. Sleep matters. Discipline matters.

Silvia

Sweetheart, yoga can be very good for weight loss, but often because it lowers stress and helps you listen to your body 🥹💜 When we’re tense, we crave quick comfort foods.

Yin yoga won’t “burn a ton,” but it can calm your nervous system and improve sleep, and that can change everything over time 🌙✨ Try a couple of active classes (like gentle vinyasa) and add 1–2 yin sessions a week.

Be kind to yourself, okay? Slow progress is still progress 🤍🧘‍♀️

Nico

Is yoga good for weight loss? Depends. Are we talking actual yoga or “influencer yoga” where people fold into a pretzel for a sponsored smoothie? 😏📸

Real yoga can make you stronger and more mindful, sure. But if someone tells you a few cute poses will erase a diet of cookies and iced lattes… lol.

Do yoga because it’s good for you. For weight loss: eat in a reasonable deficit + move more. Yoga can help you not lose your mind while doing it. That’s the honest part.

Pia

Following because I’m literally in the same place 😭🧘‍♀️ I started 2 weeks ago and I’m SO stiff. Like I can’t touch my toes and I feel awkward in class 😅

Also… am I supposed to breathe like all the time? Sometimes I hold my breath without noticing 🙈 And do I need an expensive mat or is Amazon ok?

I haven’t lost weight yet but I do feel less stressed after class, which is already something 🥺

Edo

From a performance angle: yoga can help weight loss indirectly via sleep quality, stress hormones, and recovery. Better sleep = better appetite regulation and training adherence. Also, mobility work can improve lifting mechanics and reduce injury downtime.

If you track stuff: watch HRV, resting HR, sleep duration. A consistent yoga + breathwork routine often improves parasympathetic tone. Combine yoga (2–4x/week) with steps and 2x/week resistance training for best body comp results.

Hot yoga is a different variable: more sweat doesn’t equal more fat loss, but it can increase perceived effort. Hydration/electrolytes matter.

Kiara

yesss yoga can totally help weight loss but like… also it’s about your VIBES 🥺💗✨ when ur nervous system is calm u don’t snack from chaos energy!!

try flow on waxing moon 🌙 and set an intention like “i release heaviness” (physical + emotional!!) and maybe keep a lil rose quartz near your mat 🫶🔮

alsoooo don’t be mean to ur body. she hears u. gentle consistency = magic ✨

Rocco

Hot yoga helped me drop weight, not gonna lie. The heat makes you WORK and you build mental grit. You’ll sweat buckets and it feels like a sauna-meets-yoga session.

But: sweating isn’t fat loss. The real change came because I went 4–5x/week and it kept me away from junk habits. Also I slept like a rock after.

If you try it, start slow, hydrate, and don’t push past dizziness. Heat is intense.

Elena

Yoga can support weight management, but I always remind people to be gentle with themselves and to adapt the practice to their body 🤍

If you happen to be pregnant now or in the future: weight changes are very individual, and the goal becomes safe movement, circulation, calmer breathing, and reducing discomfort 🧘‍♀️✨ Always check with your healthcare provider and choose prenatal-specific classes.

For general beginners: start with beginner-friendly flows, focus on breath, and build consistency over intensity 💕

Weight loss is surface-level. Yoga is about unlocking the operating system. Most people are trapped in low-frequency loops (stress, scrolling, sugar). Ancient practices weren’t “fitness,” they were consciousness tech.

When you breathe correctly, you stop feeding the parasitic patterns. You’ll naturally eat less, sleep deeper, and your body stops holding onto density.

Just be careful: modern studios dilute it. Find teachers who understand breath and energetic locks, not just playlists.

Teo

Move.

Breathe.

Eat simply.

Let the body follow.

CrossFit person here turned yoga fan 🙋‍♀️🔥 Yoga helped my weight loss mostly because it fixed my mobility + recovery, so I trained more consistently (less nagging pain).

If you want body comp changes: keep steps high, do some strength work, and use yoga to stay loose and manage stress. Vinyasa/power = nice sweat. Yin = recovery + sleep.

Also: strong core + hip mobility from yoga = better squats/deadlifts 😅

Giada

Yoga can absolutely support weight loss, especially if it becomes part of a consistent “routine aesthetic” you actually want to do 🕯️🧘‍♀️

For a more toning effect, I’d go for vinyasa or sculpt classes 3–4x/week and keep a soft morning ritual (walk + matcha/tea). A good mat helps too—less slipping means better form. I love premium mats, but a mid-range one is fine to start ✨

And cute leggings won’t burn calories, but they do motivate me 😂💜

Anaya

For weight loss, consider that what we call “heaviness” can live in the psyche as well as in tissue. In Kundalini Yoga we work with prana through kriya, mantra, and pranayama to clear stagnation.

A consistent daily practice—even 11 minutes—can shift your nervous system and your cravings. Practices like Breath of Fire are traditional, but they must be learned carefully and are not for everyone (especially if you have anxiety spikes or are pregnant). Start gently, prioritize long deep breathing, and add mantra to steady the mind.

When the energy channels (nadis) are clearer, discipline feels less like force and more like flow.

Yoga for weight loss? Depends how many calories you burn trying (and failing) to do crow pose without face-planting 😂🧘‍♂️

Real talk: yoga made me stop stress-eating as much because after class I’m weirdly zen and also too sore to go hunt snacks lol.

Try a few styles and pick the one you’ll actually repeat. The best workout is the one you don’t ghost after 2 weeks 😅

Renata

Yoga can help with weight loss when it helps you move more comfortably and consistently. And it can be very accessible—even from a chair.

If you’re a beginner or feel self-conscious, start with simple seated movements: gentle spinal twists, seated cat-cow, ankle circles, and mindful breathing. Add short standing holds behind a chair for support.

As your confidence grows, you can add longer sessions or more active styles. If you have joint issues or health concerns, it’s always wise to ask a professional for guidance.

Daria

Yoga can be good for weight loss, especially when paired with habits that support digestion and balance. In an Ayurvedic lens, excess heaviness often relates to sluggish digestion and routine irregularity.

Try a steady morning practice (even 15–20 minutes), then support it with warm meals, mindful portions, and simple herbal teas (like ginger or cumin-fennel-coriander) if they suit you. Don’t force extremes.

When stress lowers through yoga, digestion often improves—and then cravings become more manageable.

Lollo

Ok but like… if I do yoga EVERY day, how fast can I get flexible AND lose weight?? 😤🔥 I want results asap lol.

Is power yoga better than vinyasa for burning more?? And how many weeks till I can do splits? 😂 (don’t judge)

Give me the fastest plan pls 😅

Mina

Yoga helped my weight loss in a super indirect way. I was anxious all the time, didn’t sleep, and used food to self-soothe 🥺🌿

After a few months of gentle yoga + short meditations, my nervous system calmed down. I started noticing hunger vs stress. I also stopped avoiding movement because I felt “too overwhelmed.”

So yeah… it didn’t feel like a fitness hack. It felt like getting my life back, and my body followed 🌙🤍

Paolo

In the Yoga Sutras, practice (abhyasa) and non-attachment (vairagya) are central. Weight loss often becomes healthier when it’s approached without obsession.

Yoga can aid weight loss through steady discipline, but also through reducing the mental turbulence that drives compulsive behavior. The Gita speaks to steadiness of mind and right action—showing up for your practice, for your meals, for rest.

So yes, yoga can be “good for weight loss,” but the deeper question is whether it helps you live in a way where weight loss becomes a side effect of balance.

Bebo

Honestly yoga helped me lose weight the most when I did it like a lifestyle not just a class 🧘‍♂️✨ I went on a Bali retreat and it was life changing, like sunrise flows + smoothies + no phone = reset.

At home I do 20 min morning vinyasa, then a walk, and I try to eat “clean-ish” (not perfect lol). If you can, do a digital detox weekend, it helps so much with cravings i swear.

Also dont overthink flexibility, you will get there 😅🌿

Chiara

Define “good.”

Yoga burns fewer calories than running. Usually.

Evidence supports yoga for stress, sleep, pain, mobility. Those can help adherence.

For weight loss: calorie deficit required. Combine yoga with diet and activity.

Sara

Aerial yoga won’t be the highest calorie burn ever, but it can surprise you! Holding yourself in the hammock builds strength (core/upper body) and it’s so fun that you’ll actually go consistently 😍🩷

If you get bored with normal workouts, aerial can be a game changer. Plus inversions feel amazing and de-stressing (when taught safely).

For weight loss, I’d do aerial 2–3x/week + daily walks and keep meals simple. Consistency > intensity!

Rosa

Lia, you’re asking the most honest question: “what can I stick with?” and that’s already a huge step 🥹💜✨

Yoga can absolutely be good for weight loss, especially if stress and sleep are part of your puzzle. Even if the scale moves slowly, feeling calmer can reduce snacking and make healthy routines easier to keep 🌿🤍

Please don’t worry about flexibility or looking “good” in class—everyone starts somewhere 🫶 If you can, try a beginner series and give it a month of gentle consistency. And if anxiety feels heavy, it’s okay to talk to a professional too. You’re not alone 💜🧘‍♀️
