I’ve been doing yoga on and off for about a year (mostly random YouTube vinyasa flows). Lately I keep hearing that Ashtanga “Primary Series” is the beginner series, but when I watch people do it, it looks… intense. Jump-backs, deep forward folds, binds, the whole thing.
I’m not super flexible (hamstrings are tight) and my shoulders get tired fast. I also don’t want to wreck my wrists. I’m interested because I like structure and I want to build a consistent practice, but I’m confused by the “primary = beginner” label.
So how advanced is Ashtanga yoga Primary Series in real life? Is it suitable for a normal person, or do you need to be already strong and flexible? And if you can’t do certain poses, is it still considered “doing Primary,” or do you have to wait until you can do it all? Any advice on how to start without overdoing it would be appreciated.
